A beautiful project from our archives:

We’re proud to have supplied our Swinton sandstone for the restoration of the parapet at @fentontower, a beautiful fortified 16th-century stronghold just 18 miles east of Edinburgh.

Steeped in history and once host to King James VI of Scotland, the tower now stands fully restored, a striking landmark of Scottish heritage, craftsmanship, and enduring strength.

We’re delighted to share that our Managing Director, Marcus Paine, will be speaking alongside Pierre Bidaud in the next session of the Stone Futures CPD seminar series next week - hosted by Scotland East Region, the Scottish Ecological Design Association (SEDA) and Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

This lunchtime event, 'Specifying Stone and Stone Bricks', explores how natural stone, one of the most enduring materials in our built environment, is being reimagined for a low-carbon future.

Marcus will share insights from three decades in the industry, reflecting on how sustainable quarrying, modern craftsmanship, and innovative products like Darney Heritage Natural Stone Bricks are shaping a new era for British stone.

With a focus on reducing embodied carbon, reconnecting with local materials, and inspiring collaboration between designers, engineers, and makers, this is a session not to be missed for anyone passionate about the future of natural stone in contemporary construction.

It’s been a standout week for The Stone Demonstr

It’s been a standout week for The Stone Demonstrator, and the story’s still unfolding!

The structure at Empress Palace, Earls Court continues to turn heads – even catching the attention of the BBC. It’s been incredible to see the growing interest in what this project represents: a real built example of how natural stone can lead the way in low-carbon construction.

The stone brick façades, crafted from our Darney Heritage Sandstone and Albion Stone’s Heritage Portland Stone, are entirely self-supporting and capable of standing six storeys high without loading the main structure. This innovative approach not only reduces the material and cost of the superstructure by around 30% but also reduces carbon emissions by approximately 70% compared to a reinforced concrete frame, and 90% compared to a steel frame, all while meeting modern safety and fire regulations.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this ambitious vision to life – a truly collaborative effort led by: @designmuseum , Future Observatory and UKRI’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, and created in collaboration with:

We’re proud to have contributed our Darney Sandstone bricks to this incredible initiative - The Stone Demonstrator, which showcases how loadbearing stone can step up as a genuine low-carbon alternative to concrete. ♻

As one of only two UK stone suppliers involved in the project, we’re delighted to see our Darney Heritage Natural Stone Bricks standing alongside @albionstone Heritage Portland Stone Bricks, forming a striking façade that proves local, natural stone has a real role to play in shaping a greener built environment.

A huge collaborative effort led by @designmuseum , Future Observatory and UKRI's Arts and Humanities Research Council - designed by @groupwork_arch's Amin Taha and engineered by @steevieweevy of @webbyates , the project is part of a much bigger vision: creating a 40-acre Central London development that goes beyond net zero and sets a new blueprint for sustainable building.

The Stone Demonstrator makes a powerful statement: the future of construction can, and should, be built from natural, low-carbon materials. We hope this inspires more architects, developers, and builders to make that shift. 🌍
