This project by @_gras at Brown's of Leith decided to switch things up a bit - irregular Darney sandstone, breakage and all, brought into the room and left to speak for itself. There's honesty in a broken face, a split edge, a surface that shows exactly what it is and where it came from. The unveiling of Jimmy Strength this morning marks The unveiling of Jimmy Strength this morning marks the start of something bigger for Berwick: the first piece in a new trail of public artworks celebrating the town's heritage. Sculpted by Sebastian Boyesen and unveiled by the Mayor of Berwick, Cllr Jane Turton, and Sheriff Cllr Mike Greener, Jimmy now stands in Marygate - immortalised in bronze on a Doddington sandstone plinth, cut and supplied by us and quarried just a 20-minute drive away in the village of Doddington. A fitting way to ground a local legend in local material. A couple of the team, Josh and Ian, were there this morning to see him unveiled. Jimmy himself needs no introduction locally: 5ft 2in tall, reputedly able to lift over half a ton, and famous for carrying his pony across the Old Bridge rather than pay the toll. Fair to say he'd have had no trouble with a block of Doddington sandstone! 😂 Congratulations to Sebastian Boyesen, Berwick Rotary, @createberwick and everyone involved in bringing Jimmy home. 📸 - @pictorial.photography
